Jakarta earthquake sees 6.0-magnitude tremor rock Indonesian capital forcing terrified residents to flee ‘swaying’ buildings

A POWERFUL earthquake has rocked the Indonesian capital Jakarta this morning.

The 6.0 magnitude quake was centred offshore western Java at a depth of about 27 miles.

Buildings in the capital swayed for 10 to 20 seconds and some ordered evacuations, sending streams of people into the streets.

Many people ran along the streets of downtown Jakarta, pointing at the buildings above them, witnesses said. Local TV showed patients being evacuated from a hospital.

Rudy Togatorop, 35, said: “We felt the earthquake for three to five minutes.

“I was just sitting down, then I felt the building swaying. The emergency stairs were very narrow. I was worried if something would happen.”

The epicenter was about 95 miles southwest of Jakarta. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to Indonesia’s Department of Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics, the quake didn’t have the potential to generate a tsunami and no warning was issued.

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, straddles the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
